Whatever you do... DO NOT BUY NEED FOR SPEED CARBON!!! Borrow the DVD from a friend if you really wanna play it but DO NOT waste your money on it!

God damn! The piece of crap feels like EA just went back ten years and worked up a prototype of what street racing would look like if a bunch of wussie kids ran in the canyons.

My God! It's absolutely ZERO on the storyline!

And the whole world map is a copy-paste from Underground 2 and Most Wanted. Nothing new except for really stupid colors that are supposed to show the "glow of the night"!

The handling of the cars is horrible!

Anyway, let me just stop ranting pointlessly and try and warn you from this heartbreaking and utterly disappointing display of outdated idiocy.

Rides? What rides? There are no rides in Carbon. Oh, you mean CARS. I see. Well every "ride" in Carbon looks pretty much like a toy car to be honest and handles the same way too.

EA did bring in a different feel to the handling of different tiers of cars - Muscle, Exotic and Tuner but the new physics realism engine that EA boasted of developing fails spectacularly at giving you any sense of WEIGHT. Disgusting!

And somehow, the graphics on the whole look outdated, especially considering the in-game interface. The interfaces of both, Underground 2 and Most Wanted were extremely well done, polished and pro work. Carbon's interface on the other hand seems to be taken from NFS 3 or 4 which we played centuries ago!

If you've played Most Wanted, you know how well the designers at EA made some outstanding environments and textures and most importantly, the size of the scene was HUGE and every element looked real even on the smallest screens. The textures and lighting were so appealing and so realistic, as EA designers themselves said before Most Wanted's release - you can virtually SMELL the asphalt. And it was very well said. On several occasions when the sun shone on a rising turf, the glare would make the road seem perfectly life-like and you felt like reaching out and touching it. But in Carbon, you get the exact opposite of that goodness. The black-top is bland and boring, even with 4x anti-aliasation and road-reflections set to ON and the reflection update rate set to HIGH!

And frankly, no amount of anti-aliasation really helps the game. At the max, if you try and play the game at 1280 x 1024, it just looks the same, only starts slugging for no apparent reason.

The colors all look washed out and if the time of the storyline being the night is an excuse, my finger immediately points towards Underground 2 which has much better graphics and much more vivid colors, and these vivid colors look good too - The point!

In-game police conversations are EXACTLY the same as in Most Wanted just with the name of the locations cut out, which is truly bogus! Is EA trying to develop tight budget games now, especially under the NFS label? And what just freaked me out is that Sergeant Cross, who is the chief in Most Wanted plays a bounty hunter in Carbon and still EA kept his voice for the supervisor during pursuits! What???

The story of the game makes no sense at all. It predates to what all you did before entering Rockport City (where the events in Most Wanted take place) and "something bad" happened and you had to leave the city in a jiffy and every other person has a different story to tell about the night YOU ran away. My God! It's oblivious! NO REAL STORYLINE?

Ok fine, you don't have a good story, say so. Don't use it. Fine! The game is about racing - The need for speed - so I don't really care about a story. But it does hiss me off when I have to watch the bogus, non sense cutscenes from the story without ANY way to escape it. Let me just race and end the game, will ya please?

And what is more appaling is that with the new "window-in-window" feature during boss races, EA did not want to afford real actors to get a few decent shots of real human beings saying their pretentious-tough stuff. They just made goofy looking 3D models of it all! Yukk! And the game's engine can't even render many images in real-time! I don't know what the hell it needs all the RAM and the video memory for.

Going from Underground 2 to Most Wanted was extremely pleasant. But coming from Most Wanted to Carbon was like falling head first into a sewage treatment pond!

The gameplay is the weakest till date from the NFS series. A few races and 4 bosses is all you get! ALL - YOU - GET! And the pursuits? Well, the number of times you get chased by the police is well, easily countable on one hand! I, myself, ran only 3-4 short lived pursuits one of which was the intro you get at the start of the game with 3 local cruisers!

A new function which has been added is organizing a crew consisting of 3 active members - A scout, a drafter and a blocker. A scout is there to run ahead of you and find shortcuts through alleys which are absurdly and quite uselessly scattered throughout the map. The drafters are there to get ahead of you and then let you take a good draft speed by running behind them and then "slingshooting" yourself ahead of everyone else. Again, completely useless considering you don't get straight roads in Carbon to set up a draft anyway. Blockers might be the only ones serving any purpose at all. Sometimes you need em, sometimes you don't and frankly sometimes you wish they just weren't there in the first place. A blocker basically puts his car in the path of your rivals to immobilize them and even this functionality of a blocker is pretty unreliable. So all in all, this new CREW feature is pretty useless too.

Another new feature in Carbon would be the hyped up - AUTOSCULPT feature which lets you modify the actual 3D models of the various body parts on your ride such the bumpers, skirts, hoods, wheels, spoilers etc. I liked this feature because of the meddler I am, although after one try it just doesn't seem worth any of it. I mean, you can get the same level of customization buying a pre-fabricated bodykit! So, yea, not VERY impressive either. But I liked it, to be honest. At least it gives me something new to play with.

Coming to the car lots and car displays. Probably the worst quality display+interface in a long long LONG time! Seems like a bunch 3D modelling kids in class got together and just put it up for the sake of it. Take a sneak peek into the beautiful, shiny bright garages and car lots of Underground 2 and Most Wanted and then take a look at the SINGLE car lot in Carbon, and you'll feel the same pain that I do. Trust me on this.

The only positive thing I can say about the game is, I can tell my friends I have played the latest under the NFS label. That is it!

Hope you have a lot better time playing the game than I did.

I bought NFS Carbon and I play it on a 360 with a HDTV, and i think the graphics are pretty good.

I played it a ton the first couple days that i got it and i thought it was a complete copy of Most Wanted,, everything is pretty much the same

i got pretty far into the game and then it was just to boring for me and i stopped playing.

It wasnt a terrible game but it wasnt great either

I know, it's because we NFS freaks are biased to anything that has NFS before it's name. But if you think logically, then no, Carbon doesn't live up to the hype in the least.

I've played it on the 360 too, and no, still not the same graphic detail as in Most Wanted. Wanna test is further? Just fully mod out a ride in Most Wanted using a chrome paint for the body as well as the rims and then just hit 3 to showcase the ride and move around with the arrow keys and study the shine effect, in technical terms, the specular, diffuse and ambient regions on the body and study their correlation with the surrounding interface elements and the actual environment. Then do the same in Carbon!

For the chrome paint, the whites in the car's image just bloat up to give a fake shine and with a Candy paint, all you get is a silly amount of "noise" on the body to emulate the paint type.

Especially while racing, the darker colors seem to be colored fake and have an added layer of fake lighting over them.

OK... Gamer.TV did a special review of Carbon on their show which I happen to have watched a few minutes ago.

Even they aren't really impressed with the whole thing. One thing they particularly pointed out - INACCURATE HANDLING!

Dreadful skids in Drift mode. And we were expecting drifts to be somehow better than U2 (which wasn't possible IMO other than maybe by adding a few more high res graphical antics because U2's drifts were REALLY entertaining) and all we get is a weightless car with no brakes in it. w00t! Mission accomplished?

Drifts suck in Carbon - true!

Whatever happened to the wide scapes we ran on in Most Wanted man? The cars looked ridiculously real.

In Carbon, they're small and toy-ish and look horrible. Hell, I don't care about any other car that much but, THE MUSTANG GT looks like a wimp man!

IMHO, Underground 2 was conceptually the most perfect of the latest 3 in the NFS series. Most Wanted is better than Underground 2 in some respects, but then again it defies one simple logic - What kinda doof underground racing takes place in the afternoon? :p Isn't it as bogus as Ozzy's dysfunctional family?
