UB313 Remix Contest

Now here's a new trick for everyone. Wear your headphones, take a telescope and listen to new planets. Sounds alien? It's UB313 baby and it's here for your chopping pleasure!

About the contest

kiddk8, famous for his tangents, places a paradox in your hands this time. With his core thrashing Breaks, kiddk8 gives you UB313 to remix. Let's hear your pulse racing as you bang your feet hard on the surface and melt the new planet away with an obliterating blaze of energy! Think you can re-define UB313? Let's see what you got!

How to enter

Use the samples provided and layer them with your own creativity. All finished entries must be submitted to contests@1am-media.net before the last date for submissions.

NOTE: If you're facing problems sending the entries to contests [AT] 1am-media [DOT] net you may alternatively, send in your entries to pulkit[DOT]sachdeva [AT] yahoo [DOT] com

Contest Rules

- Last date for submissions: Saturday, September 8, 2007.
- ONLY 1 entry per participant allowed.
- This contest is open to citizens of all countries.
- Entrants must provide an MP3 version of their entry encoded at 128 kbps.
- Entrants may NOT upload their entry elsewhere until the results of the contest are declared. Doing so WILL lead to disqualification.
- Entrants may NOT ask for feedback on an unfinished entry. Doing so WILL lead to disqualification.

Links

- Listen to the original

Prizes

- The winning entry will be featured at the top of the board with it's own exclusive player.
- The winner shall receive a new custom made Signature/Avatar combo plus an increased amount of recognition in the community.
- The winning remix will be featured as a release on a free net label that will be launching next fall.

More information

The entries will be featured on nDuce and the winner will be chosen by the unanimous decision of a judging panel, which will be revealed prior to the last date for submissions.

The new rules have been added this time to ensure a few things:

- Everyone has exactly equal amount of time to finalize their entries for the contest.
- In case someone wishes to make changes once they've submitted their entries, they do not have to take it back and re-submit. You are being given time to make as many changes as you want before the submission starts.
- Only 1 entry per person, so that you can put your very very VERY BEST in one single package. If possible, mix your ideas from different genres into one good multi-genre mix. This makes it more interesting, more challenging and at the same time, more entertaining for all.

Good luck.

*** NOTE: Please remember to fill in all the ID3 tags of your MP3 file before submitting. Eg: Track Title, Genre, Artist Name etc. These can be accessed by right clicking on your MP3 file and choosing "Properties". Then under the "Summary" tab click on "Advanced" (if "Simple" is activated) and edit the fields.

Judging template:

- Production Quality: --/10

The overall production quality of the mix.

- Originality: --/10

How well the song exhibits a new structure within the same genre or how effective is the jump to a different genre and how well the new structure supports it.

New sounds used, chopping, better/unique sequencing etc.

- Relation with the original: --/10

Despite all differences, how well the remix holds on and slutes the original feel/emotion/vibe etc. Content connection to be taken into account as well.

- Overall mix: --/10

All concerns regarding a remix being over repetitious and/or lacking in appeal go here. If a remix is unappealing, this parameter gets lower values. However, since the appeal on any song is subjective, do not be biased by a "first impression". In case you find a mix to be very appealing, you are encouraged to give a good score. If not, in specific cases, it is suggested to borrow a helping hand from logic and try and work out a decent score depending upon the new genre.

Ofcourse, most importantly, the structure of the remix counts.

- Optional parameter(s) to be mentioned by the judge(s): --/10 (each parameter)

Judge(s) are advised to limit this optional parameter to 1 as it lowers any chances of confusion later on. If you feel inclined to add more, no one is stopping you but owing to a common perspective, 1 added parameter should be enough as the most important ones have already been mentioned.

DO NOT use fractional scores using this system. It was made to eliminate such ambiguities. Use full integral scores only.

FROM KIDDK8:
Optional category that will be considered for this contest:

DANCEFLOOR FRIENDLINESS

Explanation: The song is an EDM song, therefore I have added this optional parameter. Yes, it negates some possible genre options (like erm... country or breakcore), but not as many as you would think. Intros and outros aside - once the song has started rolling it should not do things like run into a big screeching "train-wreck" where there are no rhythmic or percussive elements to speak of for much of a time. This is true whether it be downtempo, house, breaks, drum & bass, trance, rock... whatever the case, it's an undeniable fact that it's a sure way to clear off a dancefloor. Also, additional consideration in this category would be in terms of structure and it's ease or difficulty in use for DJ mixing. Don't freak out at this. Common sense can be applied actually. If this category is obscure to anyone at all, please feel free to seek clarification by posting in this thread.

Some of the material in the pack is in a bit of raw form. Particularly the vox bit. This was intentionally left that way. Production skill check :)

Thanks. I sincerely look forward to hearing some wild twists on the song.

coo, I'm gonna check this one out. Probably gonna go for a dnb feel with some trance mixed in. I'll probably end up using my other Alias "D-Latch"

also, would you possibly be able to post what the key of this song is?

Yes, that question actually made me realize something.

The root note is G. If you are using Acid or software that parses the Acid info in loops - the root note found in the loops is wrong (it used the default A). Change it to "Do Not Transpose". Time signature 4/4 - tempo 146bpm.

heh aight that cool.

Yea the acid thing isnt a problem. I use acid for bpm changes in reason and thats about it. I dont like using samples (aside from vocals), so I end up just recreating them in reason. Knowing the key makes it so much easyer :D

Reason is great. Shame you don't like using samples considering how flexible the sampler on it is. By the way, the basses on UB313 were done in subTractor :)

I don't use Reason exclusively, or even primarily. I definitely would if you could utilize VST through it though, instead of having to record portions, turn them into rx2 and opening them in Dr. Rex. I think whoever made that greedy decision at Propellerhead on creating the rex format and trying to be so closed door on things didn't do anyone a favor including themselves. Hmmm.. well this has nothing to do with the thread it's in so I'm shutting up now.

Oh I do have to add though - on the recreating thing, I think that's great. The song is pretty sparse and minimal so there should be lots of room for people to express their style.

I never knew it. I was set up to "remember me" so it never happened. As far as that goes though, it might've been best to leave it. If someone doesn't create an account then they wouldn't actually enter either. I don't know really, I guess I'll leave it up to the expert

Ahh I will probably definitely enter but I don't guarantee anything because downloading a 30 MB sample pack on this stupid connection means hell to me :(.
