So people say a site that is functional and has a lotta content to give away, doesn't need a good design.

Well, now ya know...

Well I think you could invert that statement just as easily.

A site that emphasizes front-end design over content will certainly be unsuccessful too. Maybe not at first, but after the initial glitz and glamour has been seen by the user... what then?

I kind of see the design as the packaging and the content as the product. People interested in quality will settle for a generic package if the product is really that good. However the product will be short-changed due to it not attracting the less discriminate consumers. On the other hand, a lesser product may garner more consumers and interest for awhile by it's better packaging despite having an inferior product. But eventually the flash-in-the-pan interest will wane.

Hitting a happy medium and knowing your target demographics needs and desires for features coupled with content they actually want to have and/or see. Success. Certainly not an easy proposition though.

I tell you, I get quite annoyed at a bad design that sometimes even makes it difficult for you to find the information or whatever you're trying to find due to obviously too much emphasis being placed on flashy, unnessary things on the interface. I feel that user friendliness and ease of use are the most important things.

Just my three cents.

Why is it that by the term "front-end design" people only think of super flashy extreme graphics?

One can have the main layout which is user friendly nested in a cocoon of super flashy stuff too. Which is way awesome!

Ofcourse content matters the most, but well, there's no harm in wanting an equally awesome eye candy package along with it, or is it? :p

Definitely - it just kind of goes back to our different discussion about fancy flash sites without a dang thing to see on them... other than their flashy flash site lol. A slick, pro looking site definitely impresses. But in terms of success or no success - it can't do it alone of course.

I realize what I was saying kind of left from the original quotes' point. But my point was only that people sometimes take that ball and run with it to the point that it's almost like they forgot "Um.. there's no reason to log into to this site more than once!" haha
