Just a curious little query again: How many of you guys use Windows Vista and for how long? And have you ever had a problem with any of the softwares, especially drivers and DAWs in general?

Dude, I'm on XP SP2 too. Even at the institute we either use Macs or XP SP2 or SP3. Reason being Maya isn't compatible with Vista yet (other than Vista Business, which won't be licensed to the institute and therefore me)

Now I'm setting up this Vaio which has Vista factory installed and it's a preeq of a thing to work with.

ive been running vista for like 6 months now all software i have had no problems with. the issue is and has been with all new windows releases except 98 is hardware drivers it takes a while for companies like m-audio to create a new set of drivers. the only thing that is annoying about vista is that it asks you 2 sometimes 3 times when installing anything even when moving stuff around the harddrive. the layout of vista is great but takes a while to get use to. no BSD happening with it. the main reason i got vista is that xp doesnt fully use dual core and vista was built around multi core. also SP 1 came out i didnt notice anything with any compatibility issues with any that i use. one thing to do is to check out the websites for any of your hardware and see if they have vista drivers.

My new machine had Vista on it... for about a week. Now it's on XP. First I had the bug where you couldn't open your Control Panel. Then I had compatibility issues with a couple of drivers. I spent alot of time perusing forums and solved those issues... and my home network started acting up.

To add insult to injury.. finding the drivers for the Intel stuff the computer has on it for XP was ridiculous. Serves me right, I had planned to get an AMD but jumped on this "good deal".

Like all corporate products, I'm sure you could find as many kudos as horror stories and vice-versa. Myself, I will let some other foo's serve as Microsoft testers for another year or so before making the leap.

AMD's fair much better than the rest when it comes to performance. Plus it's much cheaper than Intels (at least here in India).

I had two machines (one I got from a friend for a few days) one with an AMD and one with and Intel. While a good game was running, the Intel used to crash consistently. Whereas the AMD, at max, got a bit more heated up than the usual.

So I got myself an AMD when I bought my rig. Hmmm, speaking of which, isn't it due that I add another 2-4 gigs of RAM to it and get another HDD? Bargh!

AMD costs more over here... I used to use an AMD now using Intel, had no issues with either although i prefer AMD.

a few years ago amd was top but now they are about even with there processing. they are around they same price depending on what you buy and where you get it.. and to kid i dont know why you were having trouble finding intel drivers they are everywhere now. but that is why you NEVER buy a prebuilt computer you can get a system much cheaper and put the parts in it that you want. the main reason to stick with vista is that it uses multi core processors xp doesnt it will appear in the device manager but it doesnt use it. night and day difference with mine from xp to vista for processing power. although if you want to avoid driver issues research all your hardware to make sure they have vista drivers. also if you are going to get vista get sp1 with it. amd for use with graphics like high powered video games to fair better but that is because they are more geared toward that

The problem was most definitely not finding Vista drivers for the system. The problem was finding XP drivers so that I could abandon Vista for awhile.

And as far as processor power and such ramifications on my change - all that is fine and dandy... and meaningless when I go from not being able to open my Control Panel to not being able to run some programs to not being able to access my network sporadically. I guess for me and my personal situation, it's simply not worth the hassle. Just send in your reports and such so it'll be tuned up for me next year :p

I'm certainly not implying my situation represents the sum total of Vista users. Like I said there's probably equal amount of kudos and horror stories going on. That's definitely good to know about that dual processing too.

I'm using XP SP2 on a Dell Dimension 4600 P4... It was running a bit slow loading and multitasking... put 2GB DDR RAM in and now it's flying.

My personal opinion is I just don't like it.

Alot of plugins, ive heard, don't even work with Vista. And if they do, they don't work at their optimal performance.

To me, vista is just a bunch of eye candy for the easy consumer. I had it on my new machine for a bout a month quickly downgraded to XP.

From a musician's point of view, i don't think it has much that you would need...reallly...XP is just fine for us musicians...sorry im only pointing out to the music crowd.

but thats my 2 cents...take it or leave it?

Well really, you must try it first, and PublicityStunt, it doesn't sound as though you have, though I could be wrong. :p

I haven't had any problems at all. Nothing annoying, no bugs, nothing. I haven't dug that deep yet, but everything is absolutely perfect - even things that were made years before Vista came out work, and I heard that Vista was terrible with compatability.

So I've had a good experience with it.

Ok judging from my personal experience and reading over this thread I've come to the conclusion that a whole lot of your Vista experience is going to depend on what machine is running it!

On my new machine it was crap. Forget VSTs not working - my Control Panel and networking would not even work properly.

However since some folks give it glowing reports... I think it depends also on what system it's running on.

There... 2 more cents! Posted Image
