A long time has passed by and things have kept people waiting. Businesses going under and corporates trying to push half-done deals in everyones face and poor souls like axeast and I getting squeezed in the process. Man it's been a hellride. But now that all has been said and done, here are the results of Yol remix contest which is basically comments by axeast and myself.

One thing to be noted this time around, all tracks were listened to over and over again, in different moods and different settings and the comments and reviews have been edited and re-edited several times over. And that is amazing because apparently, these contests are getting harder and harder to conclude every time. Stellar progress people.

Before we move on to the results I'd like to thank everyone who participated for their diligence and their spirit of participation and I would also like to take this moment to apologize for all the delay caused because of our over-stressed lives and a generally drained mindset causing such a huge delay before the results could be compiled.

And here's a personal message from axeast himself:

Quote:

Big thanks to all who took part.

I was stunned by the variety of directions this went and the skills/creativity displayed, amazing. Have to admit rating “pictures from the soul” isn’t my favorite part. Seems we need “winner”s to go on, so ratings are just for that (erased most of what I wrote as explanations, just any strongly “felt” points).

Other than ratings, every single one of these will stay very close to my heart.

Sorry for the unexpected time it took to release these. First we lost part of the jury due to health reasons. Then the remaining few (which is only me and PhoeniX ) went into horrible daily schedules not able to communicate on time for it, travelling etc.

And now, without further ado, the results...

Comments from axeast

CJV –Yol (CJV Remix)

the climax after the second breakdown w the add gater is bomb. things to learn about energy here.

Production quality –9/10 : good thick sound, some details lost at times.

Originality – 9/10 :

Relation with the original – 8/10 : stays in tune through understanding/transform of harmonic struct, explores its own ground.

Overall mix - 8/10 : would be great with at least one of the breakdwons deeper, longer

unique take this one. original beat w a surprising subtle eastern groove to it.

Overall mix – 7/10 : njoyed the speed breaks. things got bit too hectic and crowded as everything did the double tempo

Overall mix – 8/10 : the overall plan becomes bit vague at times.

Total – 32/40

Production quality – 9/10

Originality – 10/10 : very good neighbor.

exciting psy/experimental undertones. caught me totally unprepared, a surprise trip this.

Comments from my side

CJV –Yol (CJV Remix)

Production quality – 7/10

The bass in this remix has a very nice and distinct, granular sound to it. The kick manages to push through with just enough intensity. The constant sample that runs from the intro down till the first breakdown is entirely overdone and takes up too much headroom due to its dominance in the mid-frequency region. The high range percussion is usually drowned out in terms of volume and is dead center. Could have used some good and wide stereo separation. The snares are weak on the high end side as well. There is a basic imbalance between the three broad ranges of the frequency spectrum as a whole.

Originality – 9/10

Scores high in this regard due to the distinct rhythm and a clearly different vibe from one of the very unique moods created by other entries in this contest. Well done.

Relation with the original – 8/10

The underlying bass groove, though very impressive, does manage to shift focus from the content of the original. The re-entry through the last part that employs the distorted arp to bring back the flow of the original, saves this parameter from getting a low score.

Overall mix - 8/10

The way that distorted arp enters in around 4:48 and then moves everything into a state of unrestrained energy is absolutely fantastic. This track has a very infectious groove and tone and is a very unique combination of genres. The intro seems entirely out of place though, probably because of it being repeated too much and a shift of tone from the intro into the main beat. Still, a very solid remix. Rates high on enjoyability.

Total – 32/40

Daikinosan – Yol (dkSan remix)

Production quality – 7/10

The sound is well managed generally throughout the remix, but individual parts suffer in terms of volume and presence on occasions more than one. The mix lacks in volume control during breakdowns when it would have proved crucial by giving the sounds more presence and carrying the tone forward. The sharp tambs sample just runs contantly over the rest of the percussion, has a higher than required volume and usually distracts from the layering of sounds that just flow right beneath it. The high amount of reverb does help it a little, but only so.

Originality – 8/10

The intro is a very unique one and has a rather trippy and out-of-sync-intentionally feel to it. Nicely executed, intentional or not.

Relation with the original – 9/10

The remix has a very strong ambient-trip-hoppy feel to it. Keeps the vibe in tandem with that of the original. The high-reverb percussion also helps create a sync with the ethnic sound of the original.

Overall mix – 8/10

This remix is like a multi-plateau ride. Never really reaches a peak. The sound as a whole is soothing and generally laid back but a sense of anticipation lacks from the overall structure.

Total – 32/40

DJ Roach – Yol (Roach Reconstruction)

Production quality – 5/10

That HUGE beat is extremely impressive in terms of clarity and loudness. The same beat also kills every other sound in the remix. The bass is overdone and doesn’t help the sound either. The panning on the hats seems out of place and is highly distracting. This mix needs a lot of work on the production side of things.

Originality – 10/10

Surprising, to say the least.

Relation with the original – 6/10

Does not borrow much from the original’s vibe, nor does it build on it. Most of the times, the main melodies and synths sound like supporting elements and very feebly so.

Overall mix – 4/10

The big main beat is jaw-droppingly awe inspiring initially. But it does not let any other sound live up to its potential and hence makes no lasting impact whatsoever. The extremely pacey double-time approach drains away the juice in the rhythm.

Total – 25/40

Kiddk8 – Yol (kiddk8 rmx)

Production quality – 10/10

This is a very well balanced remix sonically. A pet peeve would be that tamb sample being a tad bit too loud overall, but it does not affect the rest of the sounds.

Originality – 9/10

The bass and beat solo part is fantastic with just a touch of that ethnic pluck sample running over it. Well played in this regard too.

Relation with the original – 10/10

Works hand-in-hand and in complete harmony with the original in every way possible. Beautiful rhythmic movements and a barrage of minor melodic and harmonic detailing that lift up the original’s tonal aura to greater heights.

Overall mix – 9/10

Beautifully composed and well placed counter-melodies enrich the sound. The layers of sound used give the track a very fluid sense of motion. The tone given to the bass pours a lot of character into this remix. Structurally, the elaborate nature of the mix does suffer from the absence of an intro of similar nature though as the sound just breaks head first into the main beat. A very enjoyable remix overall.

Total – 38/40

Le Penseur – Yol (Le Penseur Mix)

Production quality – 8/10

The overall sound is warm and mild and pretty well done in terms of balance between major frequency spectrums. It does sound a bit “hammered” or over compressed at times though and the higher mids and highs do not quite achieve the potential expansive sound.

Originality – 6/10

The detuned warp near the 2:24 mark and following detuned sounds were a nice touch. Other than that, straight off the bat, this is an alternative version of the original.

Relation with the original – 9/10

Retains the same tone as the original.

Overall mix – 8/10

As the track starts it gives out a rather chilled house-ish vibe. But before it can lay some strong structural foundations, the song quickly moves into different directions. The transitions are not abrupt, but at times, they are not in sync either. The different moods that the song goes through have been presented well and do not let the song get monotonous. A good listen overall.

Total – 31/40

Nozerhole – Yol (NoZ Mix)

Production quality – 6/10

With all due sincerity, the song suffers a little in this regard. The basses could have been clearer and more fluid. The stereo imaging would have been wider if the bass wasn’t taking up as much room as it is right now.

Originality – 10/10

Completely fresh new presentation to the visuals behind the original sound. The new blend of sounds builds perfectly well over the original’s base. Very well done in this regard.

Relation with the original – 9/10

Clearly, takes the flow of the original and laces it with new colors and a new air of elegance.

Overall mix – 9/10

A very well executed, unique remix. Tasteful additions that sound compositionally experienced. Other than some production flaws, this is a clear shot topper.

Total – 34/40

The Cultures DJ Team – Yol (The Cultures DJ Team Remix)

Production quality – 8/10

The overall sound has a very dominant mid range and drowns out the high range during the fuller parts. The hard booming kick compensates for the lack of a bassy region rather well. But something to fill in the voids would have been a welcome addition.

Originality – 10/10

Very new, almost sinister and deep club-ish vibe to this mix. Nice change from the originals.

Relation with the original – 6/10

The mix as a whole holds no association with the original other than the ambient elements and some short-lived highly fx’d sections, which are very creative but distant at the same time.

Overall mix – 8/10

Although the mix is fresh and energetic and fuses different flavors, some major sections do not fit in together. The FX plays on synths and samples from the original are very creative and make this remix very enjoyable.

Total – 32/40

The Publicity Stunt – Yol (O.N.E. Mix)

Production quality – 9/10

The song has this beautiful “raining-out-the-window” sound to it. A full-bodied, reminiscent mellow vibe throughout the track. The drums could have been more prominent and the full warm bass could have glided a bit closer in the foreground. The keys have been played very well and the remix boasts of a full and rich package with a diversity of quality sounds filling up every part of the headroom and in a very well balanced manner.

Originality – 10/10

Splendid and different vibe from such a brilliant pack of remixes. The key and pluck sections enrich the mix with a very classy sound.

Relation with the original – 10/10

The intro sample repeats itself for too long, but as soon as the song takes a full sweep after the first section, all the ambient sonics play a major role in creating a new atmosphere from the original’s take and the additional key parts thrown in compliment the original perfectly.

Overall mix – 10/10

A beautiful, mellow embodiment of an almost opposite vibe, this track has a definitive quality of being played over and over and still be as enjoyable as the first play.

Total - 39/40

You totally put these remixes under a microscope.Talking about mine, the accuracy of your comments (PhoeniX about production and Kerem about the "new injection being too strong"-it's like one of those movies that say "based on a true story",right neighbor?)freaked me out!

Thanks,i'm waiting for a TPS contest now and i hope you 2 get some rest soon.

No rest in sight :(

Flying off to Mumbai this Thursday night or Friday morning, latest. Dang, it's gonna be tiring.

But yes, I'm all up for another TPS contest and I'll definitely be there to take care of the contest and get it up, even if time doesn't allow me to get involved any other way. :)
